Ep 5: Agents are People Too, with Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary Agency
Agent Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary Agency obligingly joined me for this episode of Tell Me Your Secrets. We met on a cruise ship, one of the amazing writer events put on by Cruising Writers. After an initial misunderstanding we hit it off and became seat buddies for life (listen in for the whole story.)
I asked Michelle about agenting life—things like, “What’s your favorite part? How do you find your clients? And do you actually look at the slush pile?” Her answers may surprise you.
Listen below (or download the audio) or watch the video.
In case you’re pressed for time the short answers are:
Most of Michelle’s clients do not come from the slush pile
She loves meeting writers in person at conferences
What she’s most looking for in a book is to be swept away (so revise and revise before submitting to be sure she’s getting something polished)
You can find out more about Michelle Grajkowski on the 3 Seas Literary Agency website, along with submission guidelines.
And, as promised during our chat, if you want to see the cover I threw together for my newly contracted book Other People’s Things, here it is.
Check back in next week for a fun interview with author and new dad Seamus Heffernan.

We talked about libraries and mysteries, his bar-tender character Brian McNulty and his new librarian sleuth Ray Ambler. Listen below, or catch the replay of the video on Facebook here

Ep 3: Meet Allison Brennan: bestselling crime writer, super mom, and cat wrangler
(This post contains an Amazon affiliate link, which means if you use it to buy the book I get a small percentage at no cost to you)
Allison Brennan is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling and award winning author of three dozen thrillers and numerous short stories. I was honestly a tiny bit intimidated to interview her because of all that, but Pam Stack, head cat wrangler for the Authors on the Air show hosts, assured me that Allison is easy to talk to and a lot of fun.
She was right! I enjoyed our interview immensely. We spent what is likely an inordinate amount of time talking about chickens (sorry, Allison, for visiting my obsession upon your unsuspecting head) but also dug into how she manages to write novels about FBI characters with such accuracy and immediacy. Allison talked about shifting gears in publishing, how it feels to start a brand new series, balancing writing with kids and cats and…yes…chickens…and so much more!
I explained to Allison that one reason I loved The Third to Die was because it felt a bit like the book version of Criminal Minds, which is one of my favorite shows. Turns out Allison may not have viewed this as a compliment but she accepted it gracefully! Check out either the audio or video version of our chat below, and don’t forget to have a look at The Third to Die. Here’s the Amazon link and here’s the back cover blurb:
Ep 2: Meet Peggy Lampman--women's fiction author, foodie, failed singer/songwriter
Author Peggy Lampman is one of the best guests a podcast host could ever ask for! She joined me live, recently, to talk to me about her new novel, The Ruby of the Sea. She tells some fun and fascinating stories about her life as a passionate foodie and also reveals why she has strayed from her usual food centric novels to write this deeply moving family story about what happens when we try to silence mental illness and trauma. Listen to the end, where Peggy shifts into laugh-out-loud entertainment mode by channeling failed country and western singer/songwriter Ella Mae!
Five Things to Love About Peggy Lampman
This woman is just fascinating to hang out with. Seriously. She sparkles--not in a sparkly vampire kinda way, but in a sunshine on water kinda way
FOOD. She is a serious foody and talks and writes about food things that make my mouth water. All of her books have food things in them, even her brand new release, Ruby of the Sea, which is set in an historic lighthouse and centers around a family devastated by secret mental illness (you'll want a box of tissues at hand, but you'll still find awesome food and touches of laughter and romance to remind you that life is worth living)
She has an amazing sense of humor. Seriously. This woman cracks me up. When I interviewed her for my Tell Me Your Secrets show, she channeled a failed country and western singer named Ella Mae and I laughed so hard I could barely keep hosting! You can catch that awesome interview in video replay here on FB: http://bit.ly/2S4zxDN, or listen to it as a podcast above, or here: https://soundcloud.com/authorsontheair/tell-me-your-secrets-ep-2-off-the-page-with-author-peggy-lampman
She's an excellent writer who isn't afraid to dig deep into her characters and make us feel right along with them--while still reminding us there is laughter and good food in the world
She is courageous and deeply compassionate. Ruby of the Sea is a deeply moving book about mental illness and the wreckage that happens when we silence and stigmatize it. It is a book that needed to be written and Peggy went ahead and wrote & published it independently when her publisher wanted her to stick with Foodie books.
You can find out more about Peggy on her website. Grab a copy of The Ruby of the Sea on Amazon.
Check back in for next week’s edition of Tell Me Your Secrets, where I interview thriller writer Allison Brennan about her new release The Third to Die.
Ep 1: Pamela Fagan Hutchins: Mystery Writer and Modern Day Cowgirl
(This post contains an Amazon affiliate link which means if you use it to buy Pamela’s book I get a small percentage at no cost to you)
Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a USA Today Bestselling author of mysteries and romantic suspense. But there is much more to this dynamic and fascinating woman!
She and her husband live in a place she calls “Snowheresville” so she’s had plenty of experience with the rugged scenery that she weaves into her new Patrick Flint mystery series. We talked about horses, snow, a super fun book club organization called The Pulpwood Queens, and more.
Here’s the back cover copy from Switchback, the first book in the Patrick Flint series:
Why is Pamela wearing a tiara and a Dolly Parton Wig? What are the Pulpwood Queens? And why do I look so alarmingly like Bob and Doug MacKenzie? Listen to the podcast to find out, or watch the video below:
